Capital of the Vallée du Bandama District
Known as Gbékékro until 1900, the town of Bouaké has a population of almost 740,000.
This former military post has grown to become Côte d’Ivoire’s second largest city.
It is situated in the heart of a wooded savannah through which the River Kan flows. The city is mainly populated by traders, market gardeners and cocoa and coffee growers.
Bouaké also is home to the headquarters of the largest textile manufacturer in French-speaking Africa.
